HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP TRAINING
PROGRAM
Program
Description 2008-2009
Setting
This is an integrated program between
two major teaching medical centers affiliated with the David Geffen School of
Medicine at UCLA. The UCLA-Olive View Program is composed of the Los Angeles
County/Olive View-UCLA Medical Center located in the San Fernando Valley of Los
Angeles, 15 miles north of UCLA's Westwood campus. The second facility is
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, one of the largest community medical centers in
the United States, located in Los Angeles about 8 miles east of UCLA's Westwood
campus. The full time faculty members at each institution have UCLA faculty
appointments and are active in teaching and patient care, as well as research.
The formal affiliation between the Divisions of Hematology/Oncology at the
UCLA-Olive View Program and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was established in
1984.
Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training
Program
This is a fully integrated program with
shared rotations and joint conferences. There are currently 8 fellows in this
combined program. The combined program has 10 full-time faculty and more than
40 volunteer clinical faculty.
Fellowship training is available for 2
or 3 years. The training program is integrated between Hematology and Oncology,
and board certification in either or both subspecialties can be pursued. Three
to ten months of each clinical year is spent at each of the two institutions.
For those in the three-year program, up to one year may be spent in a research
setting. Through this integrated program, fellows are exposed to a diverse
patient population with educational opportunities in general
Hematology/Oncology, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, hematopathology,
blood banking, radiation oncology, pediatric oncology, gynecologic oncology,
hospice, and the private practice of Hematology/Oncology. Trainees may expect
to have primary responsibility for patients with a wide variety of primary hematologic
neoplasms (Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, CML, CLL, Multiple
Myeloma, acute leukemias) as well as common and more unusual solid tumors. The
trainee frequently manages common hematologic problems such as polycythemia,
ITP, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, DIC and myelodysplastic syndromes. Rotations
may be arranged for clinical training related to management of congenital
disorders, hemoglobinopathies, and hereditary coagulation disorders. Fellows
will also have continuity in their outpatient clinic for the entire duration of
the training program.
Our training program has been designed
to provide fellows a diversity of clinical experiences in a variety of hospital
and community settings. Fellows will have rotations at Cedars-Sinai (non-profit
private tertiary care community hospital) and Olive View-UCLA (county). These
institutions will provide experiences in a wide range of cultural and
socioeconomic patient groups. Opportunities also exist for participation in the
educational and research programs of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at
UCLA.
Research Program
Research is required and may involve the
molecular and cellular biology of hematopoiesis, leukemia, Myeloma, and various
cancers, as well as clinical studies in Hematology/Oncology and Hematopoietic
Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplantation or any topic of the trainee’s choice. All
fellows will have a faculty mentor to assist in the development and completion
of their research project. Each fellow
will have designated research rotations to develop, submit proposals to
the IRB, data collection, and write-up their results.
There are a number of ongoing clinical
and laboratory research projects conducted by faculty members of the Division
of Hematology/Oncology. There are
active clinical trials programs at both institutions. Ongoing areas of interest
by faculty members include: Breast Cancer and Gynecologic malignancies – N.
Feldman, MD; Differentiation of hematopoietic cells/molecular mechanisms of
hematologic malignancies and solid tumors - H.P. Koeffler, MD; Hematopoietic
stem cell/bone marrow transplantation - M. Lill, MD, S. Lim, MD and A.
Steinberg, MD; Multiple Myeloma - R. Vescio, MD; Prostate cancer - D. Agus, MD
and M. Gross, MD; Hepatoma, quality improvement – L. Powell, MD, PhD;
Hematologic malignancies – J. Miller, MD; Hepatocellular and carcinoid tumors– S. Lim, MD; Statistical Study
Design – A. Lopez, MD.
